My dear followers,
I don’t usually post messages or long texts on this Tumblr. I conceived this space as something solely focused on pictures; today, however, I have a very good reason for posting a long message, so I hope you bear with me and read what I have to say, because it affects you, me, this tumblr, your tumblr and everyone’s internet and freedom of expression.
You might have heard something about SOPA and PIPA, two bills that are currently being debated in the American Congress; if these bills pass they will certainly change the future of the internet, and not in a good way. Under these bills websites like this tumblr, like your tumblr, like Wikipedia or Youtube would effectively be under censorship: for instance, if a copyright holder claims that this website is infringing his or her rights, Tumblr would be forced to suspend it in under five days, which means there would be no time for an investigation as to the veracity or legitimacy of the claims. Websites like yours truly would be off the internet in no time. Wikipedia could end. You couldn’t even post videos of yourself dancing to Rock ‘n Roll All Night on Youtube, because it would be copyright infringement.
What shocks and scares me the most in these laws isn’t only their obviously obscurantist, regressive and debauched perspective on copyright (which is already bad enough, as it prevents us from freely spread content and knowledge over the web), but its censorship implications. One such law could be used for unimaginable harm, like taking down websites with important and relevant political content without any backlash to those who are enforcing the censorship.
Although this is an issue of American Law, it certainly affects everyone that uses the internet. Just think about how most of your service providers, as well as the content you read/see/use/hear is hosted in .com, .net or .org domains by service providers based in the US.
Because of all this I would like you to share this picture and this post as much as you want. If you’re American, contact your Member of Congress and put pressure on them to stop these bills immediately! I can’t help but to have my favorite bands of all-time. But the truth is; it’s no easy task. There’s gotta be chemistry, just like with people I meet. There are a LOT of bands I listen to and like and admire, but to say: “I’ll always love that band, not matter what” is a huge responsability. But with these guys here, it was instant. It was easy. I just had no doubt about it. No flinch. No second thoughts. So, yeah. They’re brilliant, they’re talented, and they are fucking intense. And their lyrics are helping me so much right now. I just gotta say thank you. Thank you, The Dillinger Escape Plan. I will, without a doubt, always love you.
